An emergency vehicle (fire chief) pulled in behind me at a red light. I was the only lane not occupied by multiple cars, so he decided I was the path of least resistance. Our light had just gone red, and this was a major intersection. I basically decided to pull forward while blowing the horn and hope for the best. I didn’t realize until I was in the intersection that the lights had detected the emergency vehicle and turned our direction back to green. Had they not done that, I would’ve had a much tougher time.
Had traffic been really bad I suppose I could’ve attempted to turn right into the crosswalk.

That’s one hell of a huge intersection.

Emergency vehicle times are often a bit nervous because you never know who is going to do what they’re supposed to, or get in the way of you doing what you’re supposed to.

I figured my number one priority was “move out of his way”.

As it should have been. Problems come when others try to take advantage or see how far they can get before stopping. Same mentality that makes some try to beat the gates at a RR crossing, I guess.

I love how there’s a sign supposedly permitting U-Turns but the regulatory sign up on that mast arm say “Left Turn Only.”
That’s one hell of a MUTCD/FHWA violation right there.

People are either oblivious or don’t put things into perspective.

I count at least four (but probably more) cars that were too busy ignoring the red light in front of them to notice the flashing lights behind you.

I still think all emergency vehicles should have a loudspeaker that plays this:

I am going to cut them a tiny break because their light changed from green and then back to red almost immeadalty. Then I’m going to rescind that break because yeah, there was a damn ambulance coming.

I had a similar incident when I was taking drivers ed. I was in a right turn lane that was no right on red. A cop came up behind me lights and sirens on, and the instructor said go ahead and carefully make a right on red. I've always wondered if the cop choose my lane as I was the only car in it, or if he saw that it was a drivers ed car and figured that the instructor would know to clear out of his way and would be safer bet than going into the oncoming traffic,

Had the same issue twice. One with a police car and the other with an ambulance at an intersection with two lanes. I either cutoff and go in front of the guy in the right turn lane only to make room for them or just run the light.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t it legal to run a red light if that is the only way to clear a path for an emergency vehicle?
And if it’s still illegal, I can’t imagine any police would ever fault you for that. It would surely get thrown out in court if they did, as long as you have a dashcam and/or a witness or two.

I don’t know if it’s actually legal here or not.

Nothing would happen, if it ever went to court any judge would toss it immediately. Trust me, no cop who values his time (for court appearance) would write up a VTL based on clearing the path of an emergency vehicle with their sirens on.

If the emergency vehicle doesn’t get where they’re going before this song ends, that’s a serious problem—I mean, that’s an hour of siren, right there.

In my part of the country, it is illegal to run a red - period. Simply because it is dangerous. Emergency vehicle drivers are taught to shut down the siren (maybe lights as well) if they are stuck behind a citizen vehicle so that they do not prompt them to do what the OP did and get hammered. In this case the city installed a light changer, which helps everyone with this situation.
